High Power Wimshurst Machine
Demonstrating Electrostatic Induction and Spark Discharges
Use: Demonstration experiments on electrostatics, electrostatic induction, charge storage and high voltage in physics lessons
With the High Power Wimshurst Machine, fundamental phenomena of electrostatics can be demonstrated clearly in the classroom. As the two discs rotate in opposite directions, electric charges are generated and accumulated through electrostatic induction.
The generated charges are stored in two Leyden jars, which act as capacitors. When the voltage becomes sufficiently high, a visible and audible spark discharge occurs between the electrodes. This allows students to observe charge separation, charge storage, high voltage and electrical discharges directly.
The machine is operated manually using a hand crank with belt drive and features two smoke-coloured acrylic discs with metal foil sectors. It can also be used as a high-voltage source for additional electrostatics experiments, for example in combination with the Demo Set Electrostatics 50332. Detailed instructions are included.
