SEG "Energy Conversion 2"

School level: Secondary education I and II
Materials: for 1 working group
Use: Student experiments on solar energy, electrolysis, hydrogen, fuel cell technology and energy conversion in physics and chemistry

With the SEG "Energy Conversion 2", students investigate energy conversion and storage through a connected sequence of experiments. A solar module, PEM electrolyser and PEM fuel cell enable experiments ranging from the use of solar energy and water electrolysis to the conversion of hydrogen back into electrical energy.

The PEM electrolyser splits distilled water and features graduated gas storage containers. The generated hydrogen can then be used in the PEM fuel cell to produce electrical energy. This allows students to investigate electrolysis and fuel cell technology as parts of a complete energy conversion system.

A consumer and measuring box with a voltmeter, ammeter, light bulb, electric motor and seven selectable resistors enables quantitative investigations. Students can use the equipment to investigate characteristics, power and efficiency as well as series and parallel connections.

More than 20 experiments and activities cover solar cells, electrolysis, hydrogen and fuel cell technology.
