Mini-Kit ‘Biology’
Preparing Biological Specimens and Examining Them under the Microscope
Age: 8–14 years
Materials: for 1 work group or demonstration
Use: Student experiments on preparing and examining plant and animal structures under the microscope as well as investigating small organisms and water samples
With the Mini-Kit ‘Biology’, students have access to essential tools for preparing and examining biological specimens under the microscope. The equipment supports investigations of plant and animal materials and helps students develop fundamental practical skills in biology.
Using a dissecting needle, tweezers, pipette, microscope slides, cover slips and other tools, students can prepare a variety of specimens for microscopic examination. The included hand microtome allows particularly thin sections of plant material or tissue samples to be prepared.
The investigations range from hair, feathers and butterfly wings to plant cells, pollen and potato cells, as well as cells from the lining of the mouth, hydra, water fleas and organisms found in pond or stream water. Students can also observe microorganisms in a hay infusion. A total of 18 investigations are included.
The included flower and leaf press can also be used to create a herbarium. Students can compare the shapes of leaves from different plants and press grasses, cereal ears and roots. Growth sequences of germinating plants and changes in leaf colour can also be documented.
Instructions with information on how to use the equipment and a range of suggested investigations support independent student work. All materials are stored compactly in a plastic case.
